The Japanese Konica Minolta corporation has recently started mass producing flexible OLED lighting. In the wake of this decision, the company has shipped 15 000 flexible OLEDs to a Japanese Tulips Festival, the “Shining Tulip Festival” at the Huisch Tembosch theme park. This marks by far the largest OLED installation to date and will be on display until 13 April.
The American consumer electronics giant Apple has been granted a patent for foldable and flexible mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones. The new technology is reported to protect the devices from damages caused by dropping and offers new input options. For example, certain video games could be controlled by bending or folding the device, claim the developers. In more general terms, bending could be used to switch the hardware on or off.
Plastic Logic Ltd, experts in the development and industrialisation of flexible organic electronics with headquarters in Cambridge, UK, has won the OLED Innovation Excellence award for its truly flexible AMOLED display technology.
