SmartKem appoints senior applications engineer

SmartKem (Manchester, UK) has appointed Steven Tsai as senior applications engineer from Taiwanese display manufacturer AUO. He brings a wealth of expertise in understanding the needs and expectations of display makers and will be responsible for running trials with SmartKem’s manufacturing partners.

Tsai said of his appointment: “It is extremely exciting to be joining SmartKem during such a dynamic period of growth. With its groundbreaking developments the company truly represents the next generation in display technology and I look forward to playing a part in its success.”

This is the latest appointment during a period of sustained growth for the company, increasing from 37 employees in Q1 to 44 in Q3. The company has three commercialisation agreements with leading display manufacturers in Taiwan and China, recognising the value that organic thin film transistors offer at a time when the Asian display industry is desperate to bring new differentiated products to market.

Steve Kelly, SmartKem CEO, said: “Steven is the perfect fit for SmartKem and his extensive experience will be invaluable to supporting the company during its ambitious programme of commercialisation. The world of displays is rapidly changing so it is key for us to truly understand the needs of our customers to remain at the forefront of the industry; Steven’s enviable expertise will help us to do this and we are thrilled to have him on board.”

SmartKem is a market leader in the design and supply of materials for the manufacture of high performance OTFTs which enable the development of low power, robust, flexible and lightweight displays for applications including wearables and mobile. The company has recently developed OTFT design rules and a process of record for transferring the technology on to industrial grade production lines in Asia.
