innoLAE 2020: Setting cornerstones for 2020 and beyond

 

The 6th annual Innovations in Large-Area Electronics Conference (innoLAE 2020; 21-22 January 2020) highlights innovative and exciting aspects of large-area electronics – a new way of making electronics, leveraging novel processes and new functional materials to provide electronic functionality in thin, flexible and transparent designs. The conference encompasses printable, plastic, organic, flexible and bio- electronics with topics including high performance materials, advances in devices and systems, novel manufacturing processes and hybrid integration with silicon electronics.

innoLAE 2020 presents a high calibre programme combining plenary addresses from internationally-renowned speakers, parallel track oral presentations of latest research results, a poster session and drinks reception, an exhibition with leading companies showcasing their latest products- along with extensive networking opportunities, including a Gala Dinner in the historic Old Hall of Queens' College, Cambridge.

The innoLAE conference is attended by researchers, equipment suppliers, manufacturers, integrators and users to explore emerging technology and development of products in applications such as internet of things, flexible displays, energy harvesting, healthcare and wellness, smart packaging, e-textiles, wearables and integrated smart systems.

innoLAE consistently attracts an equal balance of delegates from industry and academia, creating an important platform for supporting innovation, building collaborations and advancing the state-of-the-art. In 2019, the three days of innoLAE conference events attracted 300 delegates, representing 156 organisations from 21 countries, a significant increase in international participation compared to previous years.

The first keynote address will be given by Prof Sir Richard Friend, Cavendish professor of physics at the University of Cambridge, who pioneered the physics, materials science and engineering of semiconductor devices made with organic polymers. Professor Friend has also been directly involved in the process of commercialisation, forming several spin-out companies.

The second keynote speaker is Emre Ozer, principal research engineer at Arm Research. He is currently involved in developing bespoke machine learning compute engines on plastic coupled to plastic e-nose sensors.

The oral presentations selected by the programme committee are wide ranging – including in-situ printed electronics for spacecraft, biodegradable printed sensors for soil monitoring, shape-adaptive implants interfaced with the spinal cord utilising thin film electronics, the integration of electronic functionalities into 3D printed products and innovative R2R process equipment.

Highlights include a session focussed on LAE for energy including printed batteries, perovskite PV, electrochemical energy storage and RF energy harvesting on textiles.  Other sessions focus on printed sensors particularly those based on e-textiles and wearable devices for healthcare.

The programme includes a special session on flexible displays organised by the UK and Ireland chapter of the Society for Information Display (SID).

Displays are perhaps the most common form of large area electronics in our daily lives, with nearly a quarter of a billion m2 of display made annually.  Today, displays are predominantly made on glass using silicon-based approaches, but there are many emerging technologies using printed, flexible, plastic and organic approaches. This session will explore recent developments in large-area electronics likely to redefine where and how we use displays.

The day before the main conference is the innoLAE 2020 industry day, organised by CPI. This is the UK’s leading networking event focusing on the industrialisation of printed electronics based technologies.

Industry day is an opportunity to hear from industry experts about market drivers and how technology can be used across markets to get significant benefits as well as to network with leaders in research, technology innovation and manufacturing in printed, flexible and large-area electronics.

Conveniently situated just 20 minutes from Stansted airport, innoLAE 2020 will host researchers from around the world, giving speakers and delegates the chance to interact with key LAE decision makers, hear latest research results, network with colleagues, form new partnerships, and access an exhibition showcasing leading companies’ latest developments, all under one roof!
