VARTA Microbattery: CoinPower supplies power to wearables and hearables

To open or start a modern car, nobody has to use a key anymore. Today, miniature computers do the job, which are being upgraded by car manufacturers with more and more capabilities. These Smart Keys can do a lot more: For example, they provide information about the oil level, the remaining range, the filling level of the tank, the status of the doors and windows and the control of fully automatic parking and retrieval. To achieve all this smoothly, lithium-ion batteries with high energy density and capacity must be robust and reliable at the same time. On 9 and 10 July, 2019 VARTA Microbattery will present its portfolio of lithium-ion batteries for wearables and hearables at the Wearable Technologies Conference in San Francisco, which takes place as part of SEMICON West.

Power supply in the smallest space plays an increasingly important role in more and more aspects of modern mobility and health. This applies not only to the automobile but also to the hearables worn in the ear or on the ear. They not only support hearing, but also offer many other functions, such as listening to music, hands-free phoning, speech amplification or simultaneous translation. Hearables include classic hearing aids, over-ear headphones and wireless earbuds for making calls.

Whether hearables, pedometers in your shoe or the fitness tracker with vital data measurement - these devices are only as good as your energy supply. The demand is high: they should be reliable and durable. Thanks to their small dimensions, high energy density and exceptional mechanical stability, VARTA Microbattery's CoinPower button cells are often used in wearables. Short charging times, high reliability and robust construction round off the profile. The smallest models, the CP 7840 and CP 9440, are only four millimetres thick and were developed primarily for headphones, fitness wristbands and smart keys. But they are also being used in an increasing number of medical applications.

The shape and high energy density of the CoinPower series make these microbatteries the ideal solution for wearables and medical devices. They have up to 30 percent higher energy density than comparable batteries on the market. Miniaturisation is constantly progressing, as Philipp Miehlich, general manager OEM at VARTA Microbattery GmbH, emphasises: "In this segment we have gained unique competitive advantages and benefit from the technological shift away from cylindrical battery cells to batteries in coin format. With our leading technology, we have supported this technological change in cordless headphones and continue to set industry standards in this area with new innovations." The CoinPower series is manufactured fully automatically in one of the most modern European production facilities in Ellwangen.

Philipp Miehlich, general manager VARTA Microbattery, will give a lecture entitled "The latest generation of rechargeable microbatteries" on 9 July at 2.15 p.m. in Room 24 during the session "Enabling Tech - The Big Picture".
