Heliatek and Triflex offer new system solution for sustainable and efficient roof renovation with integrated clean solar power

Heliatek (Dresden, Germany), a world leader in organic photovoltaics and Triflex (Minden, Germany), expert in liquid waterproofing, have announced an exclusive partnership to offer a full system solution for the most sustainable and efficient roof renovation. Combining Heliatek's HeliaSol solar films and Triflex liquid applied waterproofing, customers are expected to benefit from a jointly tested solution to securely seal the roof extending its lifetime while simultaneously producing clean solar power. The joint solution is reported to be ideal for rooftops with low load bearing capacities as it has the lowest combined weight on the market, is extremely easy and fast to be applied and sets new standards in terms of sustainability – all Made in Germany.

As a technology leader in organic photovoltaics, Heliatek develops PV solutions for various building surfaces. The innovative HeliaSol solar films are based on organic photovoltaics (OPV), making the films extremely lightweight, thin, and flexible. This makes them the perfect choice for all areas and applications where conventional PV modules cannot be used. Additionally, the sustainability aspect of Heliatek solar films is noteworthy. These films do not require rare earth elements, toxic heavy metals like lead or cadmium, or scarce raw materials in their production. The solar films also have a CO2 footprint of <10 g CO2e/kWh, making them significantly cleaner than other energy sources such as lignite coal (only 1/100 of the emissions) or silicon-based modules (only 1/6 of the emissions). To ensure efficient, secure, and long-lasting bonding of the solar films, Heliatek sought out the expertise of Triflex in waterproofing solutions. As Europe's leading specialist in PMMA liquid waterproofing systems, Triflex offers optimal solutions for the most complex requirements. These solutions are as unique as they are diverse, as noted by Guido van Tartwijk, CEO of Heliatek: “With Triflex, we have a strong partner by our side who brings extensive experience in roof surface waterproofing, ensuring a safe and long-term attachment of our products.”

The technological expertise of Triflex, with over 45 years of experience in the liquid waterproofing market, combined with that of the leading specialist in organic solar films, Heliatek, is evident in the simplicity of processing both products. “In collaboration with Heliatek, we have developed a modular system for our rooftop waterproofing and coating solutions. Every Triflex roof system can be combined with HeliaSol”, says Triflex Product Manager Fabian Meyer. The HeliaSol solar films have undergone extensive testing, including wind suction, voluntary fire testing, and carry a CE marking. The electrical installation of the modules can be undertaken by an authorised professional and does not differ from that of conventional PV modules. Triflex systems have a proven long-term performance and meet the highest requirement classes for waterproofing materials. An additional advantage: Triflex products can be applied at substrate temperatures as low as -5°C. “The wide processing temperature range allows our solar films to be applied even at low temperatures. This extends the installation period to nearly 12 months a year, internationally,' explains Guido van Tartwijk."

The collaboration between Triflex and Heliatek offers end customers a high-quality waterproofing solution with immediate economic viability. Both companies make a significant contribution to environmental protection. Roof surfaces are designed to be durable, unlocking previously unused roofs to generate energy profitably. The investment quickly pays off: these solutions already save the equivalent of CO2 emissions in less than three months that are generated throughout the entire lifecycle, from manufacturing to disposal. “The unique and forward-thinking modular system currently enables the long-term and cost-effective refurbishment of unsuitable roof surfaces, especially industrial roofs, while simultaneously using them for power generation. With these solutions, we not only protect buildings, thereby extending their lifecycle and sustainably generating electricity but also demonstrably reduce the carbon footprint for companies,” concludes Triflex CEO Jens Nagel.
