E Ink (Billerica, Massachusetts), the originator, pioneer, and global commercial leader in digital paper technology, has received the Dark Sky Certification from the International Dark Sky Association (IDA). E Ink is the first display technology to be certified through the IDA. As a reflective technology, E Ink displays do not emit any light, and rely on the ambient lighting around them to be viewed. For night viewing, a simple, small LED strip can illuminate the display without the need for significant wasteful stray light that disrupts the neighbourhood or the environment.

Advances in microsystems technology and microelectronics are increasing the demand for measurements of structural details, for example to characterise channel depths and edge profiles on a lab-on-a-chip, to determine step heights, co-planarity and other packaging parameters, or to characterise MEMS based on their 3D structural profiles and derived surface parameters, such as roughness, flatness and deformation.
